Writers and Authors

The Author's Method with Jon Plunkett, Author, Hear His call

Tell us about your writing environment.
Heather-clad hillsides and rocky summits, sheltered woodlands and quiet valleys, loch shore and beaches…oh, and a cramped little room 1.5m wide by about 2m long that I call a ‘study’.

How did you conceive the structure and writing style of your book?
It just kind of evolved with time, and the mass of scribbled notes and writings that I had acquired. Sorry, I know that doesn’t offer much in the way of advice for others!

How do you structure your writing day?
I just live, doing what I love doing, and at regular intervals I stop what I am doing and scribble down some thoughts, or ideas. Sometimes these are returned to at a later date and developed. Sometimes they are not. In terms of getting these notes into a more structured format, it is usually at the stage of entering the writing into the computer that I arrange it into some sense of order.
Have you ever had writers block and if so, how did you overcome it?
I can’t say that I have experienced writer’s block. I think the fact that I am in a position where I can write as ideas come to me, then develop those over time helps. Maybe I would experience the dreaded writer’s block if writing were my main source of income with the added pressure of deadlines etc.

What is the best writing advice you have ever had?
It is not so much advice that directly relates to writing but to life as a whole that I have found most useful. Being encouraged to see life as an adventure to be lived rather than a series of problems to be overcome, and encouraged to find what it is that really makes me come alive have been some of the best advice I have had. I know it is nothing new really, but it has certainly shaped my outlook on life and led me to just enjoy the whole adventure of writing and publishing.
