How to Write a Book Review

Book reviews are pretty straight forward. Simply put; a book review is a way of inflicting your thoughts on a book on the outside world. This short guide to writing book reviews will set you on your path to literary delusion quicker than you can say Dan Brown.

The mug's guide to writing a (a non-fiction) book review:
  • What is the purpose or basic plot of the book? Hint: read the back cover.
  • Did it achieve what it set out to do?
  • How? Give 1 or 2 examples of how it’s done this.
  • What are the strengths/weaknesses of the book?
  • Who would benefit from reading this book?
  • If it's a fiction novel; how believable were the characters, plot and connecting storylines?
  • Was the novel 'a good read'?
  • Your conclusion: do you like the book or not? Note: be constructive in your criticism
