Dear God, Send Someone Else!
There I was minding my own business explaining to the Lord why I couldn’t possibly head this ministry. “But Lord”, I patiently explained, “You don’t seriously want me to do this! I’m not spiritual enough. I fight a constant battle to keep my mouth shut. I fall apart at the slightest thing. I mean why would You trust someone like me with something this big. Rather irresponsible don’t you think?”
Ever had the same conversation with the Lord? Join the club. Membership is free and is guaranteed as long as you remain a member of the body of Christ. Why would God choose you or I to do the things He has called us to do? Why would He choose people the world has classified as complete losers [i.e the foolish things of the world?]? Why indeed? So there I was that fateful Sunday evening having a ‘frank’ conversation with my Father. I guess what I was saying to Him was, “I’m not good enough. Get someone else.” However, the Holy Spirit had something else to say. “Moses was not always The Great Leader. The title came as a result of my work in Him. David was not always known as a Great King. The Greatness came as a manifestation of my Glory and he still had his flaws. What was Gideon doing when I called him? Trying to hide grain from the Midianites! And in all this you forget that there is nothing you can do to earn my love or approval. It’s yours Abidemi because of what My Son did at the Cross. So when I chose you to head this ministry, I wasn’t deluded. I did not make a mistake. I chose you because I wanted you. Why don’t you try looking at yourself from My heavenly perspective?”
We know that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind. Yet, why do we fall apart at the slightest request from Him? We know that He loves us, that He has nothing but goodness planned for us yet, we are filled with uncertainty when He requests things from us. The fear of failure is not from God. It comes from an intrinsically human nature that trusts in its own abilities rather than the powers of a supernatural divine God. It is about time that we started looking at success through God’s eyes. God called David a man after His own heart. David was a murderer and an adulterer and¾murder is about as wicked as you can get. His friendship with God is a source of continuous wonder to me. I call it a wonder because it tells me God sees something I cannot see or even comprehend.
The apostle Paul had an outstanding career in persecuting believers. However God met with him in a powerful way. And why would Jesus choose a tax collector, a member of that corrupt and highly despised breed, to be His disciple? God chose all these people for the same reason He chose you for that call He has placed on your life. When He told the apostle, “My grace is enough for you.” He was not kidding. I believe we need more teachings on God’s grace in the church. We have a lot of believers walking around with a guilt complex. I call it the devil’s baggage. The devil has got them so bound they cannot even look heavenward or walk in their righteous positions as children of a Most High God. Thus, they walk around with their heads low and (low level) demons commanding their every step. They know the truth has set them free. They know that Jesus “cancelled the record that contained the charges against us…took it and destroyed it by nailing it to the cross…God disarmed the evil rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory on the cross of Christ” (Colossians 2:14-15). Yet they do not walk in that freedom. It disheartens me because I know l have done the same. However, I have learnt that the minute I start looking at things from a Jesus perspective, things change. Immediately.
What has God put on your heart? Is it working with the homeless, ushering at the church or just being a companion to someone? Every believer has a calling from God. That calling is the cause for which you were created. Just think, God created you for a particular reason. When He “knit [you] together in [your] mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13), He said, “I have appointed you as My spokesman to the world” (Jeremiah 1:4). Whatever your calling, be rest assured that the Lord has appointed you as a spokesperson to that particular field. Believe me, He wouldn’t call you if He did not think you could do it. He is the Alpha and the Omega so He knows your beginning and your end. Of course you will have doubts; these will either drive you to God or drive you away from Him. It’s your call. So the next time you have a ‘frank’ conversation with the Lord, you tell Him, “The last time I heard You were and are still on the throne so bring it on!”
